How to Safely Decorate your Car’s Windows

Decorating your car for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and holidays is an easy way to celebrate. You might be curious how well certain products work and – more importantly – how easy they are to remove. The last thing you want is for a celebration to turn into a permanent alteration of your vehicle.

Step 1

While most people will suggest shoe polish, avoid coating your windows in this or similar substances as they are difficult to remove.

Step 2

Thoroughly clean your windows. Running your entire car through the car wash is the best bet! This ensures that not only your windows are clean but your entire car is sparkling and ready or your celebratory messages.

Step 3

Decorate your car!

Here are a few of the best options for decorating your car’s windows:

Chalk Markers

Chalk markers are the safest option when it comes to decorating your car. Markers come in two options: oil-based and water-based.

Oil-based Chalk Markers

To remove oil-based chalk marker from your car window use acetone. After washing the window with a soapy mixture of water and detergent, apply acetone to the window with a clean cloth. Don’t forget to wear gloves and apply the acetone outside – not in your garage! Make sure to avoid contact with your paint job and wash away any residue.

Water-based Chalk Markers

Water-based markers are a little more difficult to remove. You’ll need to use a razor blade designed specifically for paint removal. As the chalk accumulates, wipe it away with a clean towel. When you’re done, wash away any residue with warm, soapy water.

Acrylic Paint

You could definitely just use a typical craft paint to decorate your car, but you’ll want to choose a water-based paint. Just like the water-based chalk marker, you’ll need a razor blade to remove this paint. Once removed, wash your widows with a warm, soapy water mixture.

If you’ve left your celebratory messages on your car for too long, spray some soapy water on the paint and let it soak for a few minutes before attempting any removal directions above.

Window Clings

The safest and most effective option to decorate your windows is window clings. You can easily find a large selection of these online. They are easy to peel away and leave zero lasting marks on your windows and won’t damage your paint job. The designs might not be as customizable but they are definitely the safest option.

No matter which method you choose to celebrate, make sure to drop by the car wash when you’re done to rinse away any lasting residue. Have fun celebrating!

Note: Not everyone feels comfortable with paint on their vehicle. Do this at your own risk and be as careful as possible to avoid any paint or chemicals on your vehicle. If you are nervous or want to avoid any risk of damage to your car or another car, consider banners, posters, or streamers!
